Why Fly
Recreationally?
Do you have a desire to fly for recreational reasons, or do you want to become a commercial pilot flying for an airline?
How much money do you have available for the activity. Flying is not a particularly cheap activity, but it doesn't have to be exclusively for the rich and wealthy either.
In simple terms, flying recreationally (RAAus) is less than half the cost of flying heavier general aviation (GA) aircraft, and permits ownership of your very own aircraft for as little as $10,000 purchase price.
If you choose wanting a career as a Commercial Pilot (CPL) or the ability to learn aerobatics , the recent changes to CASA licensing laws (Part 61) now allow you to train under RAAus, and once attained, convert your RAAus Pilot Certificate to a Recreational Pilots License (CASA RPL), allowing you to fly heavier GA aircraft up to 1500kgs, and then move on up through the PPL and towards the CPL. All your hours in a RAAus aircraft count towards the RPL / PPL / CPL and all you need to do is show proficiency in the heavier aircraft and meet licensing requirements for the higher license.
RAAus aircraft are not permitted to fly aerobatics and so RA-Aus pilots are not trained or allowed to perform aerobatic manoeuvres, but now with the RPL, you can easily migrate to GA and aerobatics.
Talk with your instructor about your dreams and desires and get a better picture of what you can achieve as a pilot from all the areas of aviation.
ENDORSMENTS
Once you get your Pilot Certificate, you can Captain an aircraft and fly anywhere within 25 Nautical Miles from the departing airfield, but not land at another airfield. You must always be in "Class G" airspace (not Perth International Airport Airspace), and not above 5,000 feet unless trained to use radio.
To expand your capability, you can complete a number of endorsements to your certificate, including, but not limited to:
To train for these endorsements, discuss your desires with an instructor as you will be required to complete more study, pass exams and once again, prove your proficiency as a safe pilot to the CFI.
If you then choose to move into GA flying, your Pilot Certificate and all endorsements will be recognised by CASA towards the issue of your RPL.
GA TO RA-Aus CONVERSIONS
Pilots who hold GFPT / RPL / Private Pilot or higher licence's in General Aviation can easily and quickly convert to recreational flying by completing a minimum 5 hour conversion course, of which 1 hour must be solo.
You will be required to satisfy the CFI that you are conversant and proficient in high drag, low inertia type aircraft, and be familiar with the RAAus flight training syllabus.
